Home cash not easy

David Williams, Newcastle Herald 14th April 2003

Question: Can I make money from home using the Internet?

Answer: Yes and no. If you're talking about "serious money", as often promised in junk mails that allege you can make thousands of dollars a week by doing nothing more than sending e-mail, the answer is definitely not.

If you're talking about doing "real" jobs then the answer is maybe, in that some companies may well offer flexible working hours and environments including online from home.

Nevertheless, there is no such thing as a "telecommuter" per se, but rather skilled people in regular paid employment whose employers just happen to be flexible in this regard.

If you're talking about making some extra cash in your spare time then the best answer I can offer is a qualified yes; it can be done but the money you'll make won't pay for a holiday or new car.

There are three main ways that come to mind.

Firstly, some companies offer cash incentives if you allow them to send you advertising. These generally require you to complete a profile, which means advertisers can specifically target particular consumer groups.

You will receive a small amount of money for each advertisement you receive (and acknowledge, whether you take up the offer or not). You can elect to receive a cheque once your balance reaches a certain level. Try PureProfile.

Secondly, although this isn't technically "making money", some sites offer a small reward for each purchase you make through them. If you generally feel comfortable buying online, then this may be useful for you because you can receive a small amount of money back for each purchase you would make anyway. Try SmileCity.

Thirdly, and in the more traditional way of money-making, you can sell items you no longer need, or offer services, over the Internet. Consider registering with an auction site like eBay. Consider a tendering site like eLance to offer your skills, whether computing, accounting, mechanical, painting, or anything else.
